Joint Injections Q & A

What are joint injections?

A joint injection is a minimally invasive treatment for joint pain and damage, particularly if you have pain from a chronic or degenerative condition, like arthritis. These non-surgical injections can provide lasting pain relief, allowing you to comfortably participate in physical therapy and therapeutic exercises while you heal. The combination of pain relief and physical therapy can help restore function to your injured or damaged joints.

What are joint injections made out of?

There are several different types of joint injections to relieve pain, but the most common are steroid injections. A steroid injection uses a combination of anesthetic medication, such as lidocaine or bupivacaine, to numb pain, and a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids primarily reduce inflammation in the joints to improve mobility and range of motion.

Health Solutions also offers hyaluronic joint injections to treat knee pain. These injections can help rebuild the cartilage around your knee if you’re experiencing pain due to osteoarthritis.

Joint injections are safe, effective treatments that your doctor can inject into your hips, knees, shoulders, elbows, hands, ankles, back, and neck to relieve pain.

Which conditions cause joint pain?

Many degenerative conditions and injuries can cause joint pain, including:

Arthritis

Arthritis is a chronic condition that causes joint inflammation. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis — the “wear and tear” arthritis — and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA is an autoimmune condition that leads to inflamed joints throughout the body.

Bursitis

The bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that provide a layer of cushioning for your joints. Repetitive motions can damage the bursae, leading to pain in the joints. While bursitis can develop in many different joints, it’s most common in the hips, elbows, and shoulders.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia causes musculoskeletal pain throughout the entire body, including the joints. In addition to chronic joint pain, fibromyalgia can lead to memory problems, fatigue, and mood changes.

What can I expect from joint injections?

The team at Health Solutions administers joint injections with fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance to ensure they target your pain in the safest, most effective way possible. Because they use a local anesthetic to numb the area before the injection, there’s minimal discomfort throughout the procedure.

While you should be able to walk on your own after the injection, it’s important to have a trusted friend or relative to drive you home after. Most patients can resume their normal activities the next day.

Joint injections provide quick pain relief that most patients notice within two to seven days following the procedure.
